- Moderately damp: the space smells musty in humid weather but looks dry. Roughly 50 to 60 percent relative humidity.
- Very damp: you notice damp spots on the floor or lower walls, and the musty smell is constant.
- Wet: surfaces feel clammy and you can see beads of moisture on walls, pipes, or windows.
- Extremely wet: there is visible seepage, standing water, or condensation running down surfaces.

As the temperature drops, they pull less water, and below about 65°F frost can form on the cold coil and stall a unit that has no defrost feature.
