What If the Ceiling Already Has Mold or Stains?

Where condensation lingers, mold usually follows — often taking hold on a persistently damp surface within 24 to 48 hours. Fix the moisture first, because cleaning mold without stopping the drips just resets the clock.

For the cleanup, follow the EPA’s size rule. The agency says that if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet — “less than roughly a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch” — “in most cases, you can handle the job yourself” with detergent and water on a hard surface, after you fix the water problem and dry everything completely. Anything larger, mold that keeps returning, or drywall that has been soaked and sagged calls for a professional and usually replacing the affected material.
